There is a long history of thinking about technology and media as extensions
\nof the body. According to this idea, the hammer is an extension of our hand,
\nthe car an extension of our feet and the telescope an extension of our eyes.
\nIn this workshop we will focus on our senses and investigate the artistic
\npotential of augmenting them.
\nWe will talk about different schools of thought about human perception and
\nfantasize about how it would be to have animal senses. We will talk about
\nresearch that has been done into developing artificial eyes for blind people
\nand will think about cyborgs. We will discuss artists who are interested in
\nrevealing things we can not normally perceive and we will wonder if it is
\neven possible to understand things we have never perceived before.
\nIn the workshop we will develop small, wearable devices with the aim to
\nchange how we perceive. These devices can be optical, acoustical,
\nmechanical, electronic, digital, conceptual, magical or other. For those
\ninterested in electronics, there will be the opportunity to build a simple
\nhaptic interface and investigate how this can be used in combination with an
\narduino and a sensor in order to become a wearable extra sense.<\/p>\n

Atelier de Augmentation Sensorielle<\/p>\n

La technologie et les m\u00e9dias ont \u00e9t\u00e9 de longue date parfois consid\u00e9r\u00e9s
\ncomme une extension du corps. Selon cette id\u00e9e, le marteau serait une
\nextension de notre main, la voiture une extension de nos pieds ou le
\nt\u00e9lescope de nos yeux. Dans cet atelier, nous allons nous concentrer
\nsur nos sens et \u00e9tudier le potentiel artistique qu’il y a \u00e0 les
\naugmenter.
\nNous discuterons de diff\u00e9rentes \u00e9coles de pens\u00e9e relatives \u00e0 la
\nperception humaine et nous imaginerons les sensations que nous aurions
\nsi nous avions les organes sensoriels que poss\u00e8dent certains animaux.
\nNous parlerons des recherches qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 men\u00e9es dans le d\u00e9veloppement
\nde la vision artificielle pour les personnes aveugles et \u00e9voquerons
\n\u00e9galement les cyborgs. Nous examinerons les travaux d’artistes qui se
\nsont int\u00e9ress\u00e9s \u00e0 r\u00e9v\u00e9ler des choses que nous ne sommes pas en
\nprincipe capables de percevoir, et nous nous interrogerons sur la
\npossibilit\u00e9 de comprendre des choses que nous n’aurions jamais per\u00e7ues
\nauparavant.
\nAu cours de l’atelier, nous fabriquerons de petits appareils
\ntransportables qui modifient nos perceptions. Ces dispositifs peuvent
\n\u00eatre optiques, acoustiques, m\u00e9caniques, \u00e9lectroniques, num\u00e9riques,
\nconceptuels, magiques ou autre. Pour ceux qui sont int\u00e9ress\u00e9s par
\nl’\u00e9lectronique, il sera possible de construire des interfaces tactiles
