#29 on Teletekst

A text I wrote in 2000:

#29 is a generator of moving horizontal and vertical coloured lines. The algorithm on which it is based consists of two parts: a system which distributes events over time by way of projection, and a set of rules that determine what happens when two events interfere.
In this project I am exploring an approach to composition which is very new to me: most of the films I made (except perhaps film #5) were based on a linear paper score with time as the horizontal axis, divided into sections and on which events are plotted. Time has more than one dimension in the algorithm at the heart of #29.

In the beginning of april 2000 I made a first version of #29 for the teletekst system, the dutch equivalent for BBC ceefax. During two months it was shown for a whole day every five days on dutch national television channels Nederland 1,2 and 3, teletekst page 379.

The idea was to turn it into a film, but that hasn’t happened. I did make a reactive installation out of it in 2003.
