and some very poetic words by Pierre de Latil about how this machine finds an equilibrium in all circumstances:

“Comme l’eau des cavernes obscures toujours trouve un chemin libre, et toujours le chemin le plus court, à travers les obstacles, et les détours, et les barrages, et les sables qui veulent l’absorber, ainsi toujours l’influx électrique sait aller au plus droit. Et la voie qui s’avère la meilleure, c’est celle-la qui demeure ouverte au courant comme, dans les méandres souterrains, toujours s’offre le lit à l’eau de la rivière. Pas plus que la machine, l’eau ne ‘sait’ où elle va; elle n’en va pas moins où elle doit aller pour obéir au principe de la moindre action.”

In my translation this would read:

“Like the water in dark caves always finds a free way, and always the shortest way, through obstacles, detours, dams and sands that want to absorb it, like this the electrical stream always knows to go in the straightest way. And the path which reveals itself to be the best, stays open to the current; just like the river bed always offers itself to the water in the subterranean meanders. The water doesn’t ‘know’ where it is going, not more than the machine; nevertheless it’ll go where it has to in order to obey to the principle of least action.”
